Are new hires required to work in the Adult Detention Center?
No, the San Juan County Adult Detention Center is separate of the San Juan County Sheriff's Office and deputies do not serve as detention officers.
Do I have to live in New Mexico to be a deputy with the San Juan County Sheriff's Office?
No. However, only deputies who reside in San Juan County are issued a take home vehicle.
How long is the academy?
The current academy curriculum is between 19-21 weeks.
If travel is necessary for testing, does SJCSO pay for or help defray the costs?
No, we do not offer any type of travel reimbursement for the hiring process.
Is there an age requirement or limit?
The only requirement is that an applicant must be at least 21 years of age upon completion of the academy. Applicants may be any age as long as they can meet the physical, emotional, and mental requirements of the position.

When will SJCSO be testing for new deputies?
The academy has 2 classes per year and testing for those classes will be 3-4 months prior to those classes starting. Current openings are listed on our website.
Where is the academy located?
The academy is located at Safety City which is a few miles west of Farmington, NM.
Will I be paid during the academy?
Yes, if hired by SJCSO you will be paid as a full-time employee and collect all benefits afforded to you while in the academy.
Will I have to work in the Detention Center?
No. The Sheriff's Office and Detention Center are separate departments.
