Through a grant from New Mexico legislators, San Juan County has commissioned a study of Bridge 8118 (Also known as 5-Mile Bridge) alternates to serve the vehicle traffic. 

Due to the recommendation of the engineering firm in the study, the San Juan County Commission authorized the closure of the bridge to all traffic on June 5, 2023. This closure came far earlier than expected, and before any alternate could be funded. 

On June 29, the San Juan County Commission met with residents and presented the studied alternate options and gathered feedback.
